Prepare the Interior of Your Home
Around the House
- If you smoke or have pets, air out your home. Make sure you remove all unpleasant odors. Because you are used to the smell of smoke or your pets, ask a non-smoker, non-pet owner friend to make sure the odors are really gone.
- Wash all your windows and shampoo the carpets.
- Spot clean the walls and repaint them if necessary. Pay close attention to trouble spots around doors, light switches, and electrical outlets.
- Remove pieces of furniture. Less is better. Less makes the room feel larger.
- Clean and polish metal accessories such as doorknobs and lamps.
- Fix damaged windows and doors and tighten all the doorknobs.
- Remove andy ornate fixtures, such as a chadelier, that the buyer might expect is part of the home's price. Usually buyers assume that anything attached to the house, such as drapes, blinds, TV antennas, and light fixtures go with the sale.
- Get rid of eccentric decor. This includes your teenager's bedroom, removing posters, hanging beads, or friendly spiders kept in a jar.
In the Kitchen
- Put all small appliances, like toasters, blenders, or bread machines away so they don't clutter the counter-tops.
- Clean and wax floors.
- Clean all appliances, particularly the oven and the refridgerator. You may have to buy new burners. Burners are inexpensive, but they can make a huge difference in how your oven looks.
- Don't forget to take out the garbage before showings.
In the Bathroom
- Fix any damaged drawers or cabinet doors and clean them inside and out.
- Fix leaky faucets. They stain and give the buyers the impression that your plumbing is bad.
- Wash the shower curtain. Replace it, if necessary. Leave the curtain open to make your bathroom look larger.
- Clean out clothes hampers. They often carry odors.
- Invest in new towels and rugs. It will give your bathroom a brand new look.
In the Bedrooms
- Remove clothes you aren't wearing from the bedroom closets and pack them. If you have clothes crammed into the closet, even if the closet is large, the buyer will remember it as small.
- Make sure all the beds are made.
- If you have to bribe your kids to keep their rooms clean, do it.
